Final Project

GROUP BLOG: For our final COMM 165: Intro to Visual Communications group project, we were required to demonstrate the mastery of the material that we learned throughout the semester. Our group created a board game called,“Journey to the North Pole.” It is the perfect holiday game to play this month. The age group for this game is ages four and up. Our group collaborated effectively and made sure that everyones’ ideas were incorporated. This required working as a team to come up with the final product. Our group members, Shayne, Rachel, Camryn, Sara gathered all of our art supplies that we thought would be the most useful, beneficial and easily accessible. For example, Sara brought the glue, sharpies and wrapping paper, while Camryn brought the cotton balls and Rachel brought the poster board and candy canes and shayne brought the colored paper. We used the wrapping paper to decorate the border of the poster to make it even more festive and visually pleasing; we knew we wanted to create something that was eye-catching. We used the glue and tape to prevent everything from falling apart. Also, none of us had string, so we thought of using the red string that came with the paper bag that Sara brought. One of the main recurring themes throughout this project for us would be creativity. We struggled to develop ideas and realized it was because we could not write the rules of the board game without having some sense of what the final product was going to be like. Instead, we decided to create our game first, then go back and look at everything, item by item, to make sure the rules were explained fully and properly. First, we traced everything out with a pencil on a separate sheet of paper. Second, we determined the length and width for the path leading up to Santa, before we traced everything over with colorful sharpies. Next, we outlined the squares in red, green and black. We also added candy canes to represent ladders that are usually used in normal shoots and ladders instead. We used colored paper and stuck to the theme of red and green throughout the wrapping paper and writing. Professor Chang taught us about grouping and color coding images according to their similarities. After, we used glue sticks to make sure the cotton balls that acted as snow would not fall off. We repeated the same process for the candy canes, the wreath in the start square, the red bow in the right hand corner and the wrapping paper. Professor Chang taught us about Gestalt and that grouping and color coding images according to their similarities. Then, instead of using an actual slide for the chutes, we used cotton balls to fill up the spaces and came up with a way for the players to easily slide their hershey kiss game pieces closer to The North Pole. To symbolize that you are going down, we placed red squares to show that not only is it a Christmas color, but it also means that it is a bad thing because you are going backwards. We used the same concept happens with the green, but green is a good thing. The players are making progress and are one step closer to reaching The North Pole! Lastly, we made the Christmas wreath and wrote the title at the top of the game board. HAVE FUN!

In this blog post for the final presentation, I worked with my group members, Sara, Camryn, and Shayne. We worked together to build a 3d project. We decided to build a chutes and ladders rendition game, but holiday themed instead. It was really fun doing it with them because everyone worked so hard. What we struggled with as a group is we took kind of a long time coming up with some ideas of games and to be creative with this project, but we put our minds together and came up with a great ideas. To figure things out, we drew them and sketched our ideas out on a piece of paper. Then, we came up with our idea. Our AHA-moment was when we realized that we didn’t have a star at the end for our board game and instead we used a penguin from a gift bag. If we had more time we would of definitely have made it more colorful and a bit more decorative. Working in a group project was a bit helpful to come up with more ideas. What we would do if we where to do it all over again is that we would fix the colors of the bored and make it more colorful and be a little more creative with the game bored instead of doing a game that already existed we could of done and created a more clever idea.
